Summary:
The Board of Education is asked to proclaim October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, Since 2004, the President of the United States and Congress have declared October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month, helping individuals protect themselves online as threats to technology and confidential data become more commonplace; and
WHEREAS, Cybersecurity Awareness Month takes place in October as a celebration focusing on local, regional, national, and international interest to inspire, educate and engage learners of all ages, educators, parents, employers and the community on the importance of cybersecurity; and
WHEREAS, cybersecurity education and awareness is crucial for everyone, including large corporations, small businesses, financial institutions, schools, government agencies, the home user, and anyone who connects to the internet, be it with a computer, mobile phone, or other internet-connected device; and
WHEREAS, monitoring your accounts, being conscientious of what you share online, keeping computer software up to date, creating unique passwords and changing them regularly, installing antivirus programs and firewalls, and using mobile devices and other internet-connect devices safely are ways people and organizations can protect themselves from phishing, viruses, ransomware, other types of malware, financial loss, and loss of sensitive data; and
WHEREAS, there are currently over 465,000 jobs open in cybersecurity nationally and the global cybersecurity workforce is experiencing a shortfall of 3.5 million cybersecurity professionals in 2022, enough to fill 50 NFL stadiums, and local talent can help address this deficit through cybersecurity career awareness, exposure and discovery activities.
WHEREAS, cybersecurity practitioners provide significant contributions and innovations to society and the month long celebration provides various activities for learning about the contributions, innovations and opportunities that can be found by exploring cybersecurity as a field of study or career choice; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the Pueblo School District No. 60 Board of Education, does hereby proclaim the month October as “CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH”.
